Become a musician

Do you want to become our newest band member? Keep on reading, because at the start of the semester we are having open rehearsals again (Monday 11/02). Don’t hesitate to join us, because later during the semester, we cannot accept new members.

Who can enter?

Everyone who studies in Ghent and has reached a musical level comparable to the higher classes of a music academy education (around 7 to 10 years of music lessons) or equivalent because of experience, can join. If you want to join, you of course have to be present at the rehearsals (every Monday evening), concerts and preferably our rehearsal weekends too.

When and where does GUHO rehearse?

We rehearse every Monday from 20h to 22h in the Trechterzaal of student house De Therminal (Hoveniersberg 24, 9000 Ghent), and from 20h to 22h during open rehearsals. Rehearsals do not continue during university exam periods (January and June) and the summer holidays (July-August). Every semester, we give a concert (early December and early May).

Selection procedure

To control the balance and quality of our orchestra, we decided to implement a selection procedure. At the start of each academic semester, we have one or two open rehearsals, where all applicants are welcome. We ask new musicians to fill in this application form before coming to the open rehearsals. Then we will let you know when you are invited for a conversation so we can get to know more about you, your experience and your motivation. After this, there is a short audition, where we ask you to play a short musical piece for our conductor and one or two GUHO-members. This doesn’t have to be extremely difficult; we really just want to see that you’re not afraid to play! Afterwards you can join us for the open rehearsals, where you will get to know your musical colleagues a little bit better.

After the open rehearsals we will decide whether you are accepted into GUHO. Motivation and engagement during the rehearsal are more important to us than the audition itself.

We are primarily searching for:

  • Bass clarinets
  • Bassoons
  • Trumpets
  • Percussionists
  • Euphoniums

Clarinets, french horns, trombones, tubas and string bass are welcome to apply as well. Alto saxophones and oboes are welcome to apply, however, the number we can accept is limited. For piccolo, flute, tenor and baritone saxophone, we are not able to accept any new musicians at the moment to ensure our musical balance. Keep updated on our facebook page, maybe we can accept you in September!

Do you want to become a member of GUHO? Fill in this application form, so we can arrange your audition!
